Local Organic Food Through “Growing Washington”
Community Supported Agriculture
My wife and I couldn’t contain our excitement yesterday when we went over to the Lake Forest Park Farmer’s Market. We were picking up our first Local Choice Food Box which contained a wonderful array of locally grown organic vegetables produced in Woodinville. Living in Kenmore, this means we are obtaining high quality food from a source that’s literally just up the road.
Earlier this year we ordered a whole season’s worth of fresh produce through “Growing Washington” which is known as a subscription farm or a CSA: Community Supported Agriculture. We are going to receive weekly food boxes for 18 weeks (June 19 – October 18). We will be choosing from almost 120 varieties of vegetables. As the season progresses, I’m going to give you periodic reports about the foods we are receiving and I’m also going to prepare some recipies of the more “exotic” vegetables. Check this out:
In this box we received two varieties of beets, heirloom carrots, several types of baby lettuce greens, spring onions, two beautiful bunches of kale and a dozen free range chicken eggs! Let me assure you, the carrots are some of the best I’ve ever eaten and I’ve already sauted a bag of the braising greens (a mixture of beet greens, chard, kale etc.) with olive oil, garlic, some red pepper flakes and a little home made chicken stock!!!! Yummy. Stay-tuned for a summer of earthly delights.
